  Newbery Medal
Awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children published in the United States in the preceding year.
  Caldecott Medal
Presented each year to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book published in the United States in the preceding year.
  California Young Reader Medal Program
Students in grades K-12 recommend and honor their favorite books and authors, and enjoy recreational reading through this children's choice award.
  Coretta Scott King Award
Commemorating the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his wife, Coretta Scott King, this award is given to authors and illustrators of African descent whose books promote an understanding and appreciation of the "American Dream."
  Theodor Seuss Geisel Award
This annual award is given to author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers published in the United States during the preceding year. Winners are recognized for their literary and artistic achievements, creativity and imagination to engage children in reading. 
  Pura Belpré Award
This award is presented to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. As of 2009, it will be given annually.
