Be a Part of Your Library

As a library volunteer, you are joining residents who share their time and talents to make a difference in their library and community. Over 250 volunteers play an important role in the success of the Santa Clara City Library and to the delivery of its services.

Volunteer Opportunities for Adults

Genealogy Room Consultant
Genealogy volunteers help beginning genealogists with their family history research and help students and others locate material they need in the library's Heritage Pavilion collection which includes both family history and local history books and files. Volunteers should have some experience doing family history research and be able to fill out basic genealogy pedigree charts and forms and be interested in family and local history research. Volunteers are scheduled during library open hours. A commitment of two to eight hours per month is requested.

Homebound Volunteer
Provide a vital link to library services by delivering books and other library materials to our homebound patrons or residents of a retirement or healthcare facility. Qualifications: Valid California Driver’s License; must be able to lift up to 3 lbs.; good listening skills; patient; dependable. A monthly commitment of three to four hours per month is requested.

Literacy Tutor-POSITIONS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE 
Teach an adult to read. You'll be amazed at what you learn! Read Santa Clara needs literacy tutors. Volunteer tutors work with adult learners to improve their reading, writing and math skills. No teaching experience needed! Orientation and 12.5 hours of tutor training provided. Volunteers must make a time commitment of two hours per week for six months. Youth Services Volunteer-POSITIONS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE
Assist the Youth Services Department with sorting library materials on carts, shelving paperbacks and videos, shelf-reading and straightening-up shelves. Must have attention to detail, be able to bend and reach on shelves of varying heights. Must be comfortable with numerical ordering (Dewey Decimal System) and alphabetizing.

The Santa Clara City Library Foundation and Friends
The Santa Clara City Library Foundation and Friends is a non-profit organization dedicated to supplementing public funding to expand and enhance the Library's programs & services. The Foundation Board actively seeks gifts, grants, and bequests, while the Friends group contributes to this effort by raising funds mostly through the sale of used books that have been donated to the organization.

The Friends have a diverse set of volunteer opportunities available. They seek volunteers who enjoy working with people and have customer service experience for the Friends Bookstore in the Central Park Library. Volunteers are also needed at the Friends monthly book sales, which are held every third Saturday of the month.
