Author Craig Harwood, a professional geologist, history enthusiast and a descendant of John J. Montogomery's father, Zach Montgomery, will discuss his book, Quest for Flight: John J. Montgomery and the Dawn of Aviation in the West.  Published last fall by the University of Oklahoma Press,  Craig Harwood and his co-author Gary B. Fogel wrote this book about the Santa Clara College aviation pioneer for these reasons:

1) to define John J. Montgomery in history

2) to redirect the focus of traditional American aviation historical narratives (geographically speaking) from the east to the west to show that California based men and women made pioneering contributions in various aerial fields around the the turn of the 19th century.

Quest for Flight sheds light on, and celebrates the story of a lone inventor who accomplished the seemingly impossible and shared it with the public, thereby inspiring a generatin of Americans to take to the skies.  The role of women in the California aviation field is also explored.

A book signing program will follow the lecture and the book will be available for sale.
