Silicon Valley Reads: Monday Movies in March – Where Soldiers Come From
Silicon Valley Reads 2013 focuses on the “invisible wounds of war.” The Monday Movies in March series features short documentary films on veterans.
Where Soldiers Come From is a documentary (91 minutes) following the four-year journey of childhood friends from a snowy small town in Northern Michigan to the mountains of Afghanistan and back; they are forever changed by war. Enticed by a $20,000 signing bonus and college tuition support, two best friends join the National Guard after graduating from their rural high school. Soon joined by their group of friends, the young men eventually are sent to Afghanistan, where they spend their days sweeping for Improvised Explosive Devices. By the time their deployment ends, they no longer are the carefree group they were before enlisting. The film won the Independent Spirit Truer Than Fiction Award and was nominated for an Emmy in 2012.
