Duane Dalley is an Accredited Genealogist associated with the International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists (ICAPGen). He specializes in Scandinavian genealogical research. He is a long time resident of Santa Clara and has been an accredited genealogist for over 20 years. He is on the staff of the Santa Clara Family History Center.
The objective of the presentation is to assist the researcher to find valuable records of their Scandinavian ancestry by covering the basics of Scandinavian research. The governments of Denmark and Norway have digitized most of their records and they can be found in on-line sites which can be accessed from the home of the researcher at no charge. Sweden has also digitized most of their records and have an on-line site which is available with a subscription, but they can be accessed through the use of Ancestry.com (either by subscription or by using Ancestry Library Edition at Santa Clara City Library). The records in Ancestry are not as complete as the Swedish government digital records which can be accessed at no charge at the Santa Clara Family History Center, 875 Quince Avenue, Santa Clara. The availability of these records make it easier than ever before to accomplish meaningful family history research.
The basics of Scandinavian research in this presentation will include the Scandinavian languages and alphabet, naming patterns including patronymics, Scandinavian Jurisdictions, Census records, and Parish records. Resource material will include information on making meaningful research together with establishing the documentation which has often been neglected.
This program is sponsored by the Santa Clara County Historical & Genealogical Society.
