Schools and Class Visits Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for the 2015-2016 School Year.

What grades do you allow for class visits?
We will schedule visits for Pre-K through 12th grade. Your program will vary based upon the age of your group. We will determine your program while arranging your visit. We will do our best to accommodate your personal interests (theme, content) for your particular group.

How do I schedule a visit?
Contact Youth Services at 1-408-615-2916, or come in to the library at least two weeks in advance. Please wait until August to call. Requests for visits with less than two weeks notice cannot be accommodated.

How many times can I bring my class to the library for a visit?
We can only accommodate one organized class visit per class per year. We do have classes that visit the library on a weekly basis, but do so on their own. If you wish to do this, we would ask that you give us advance notice of the day and time you will be visiting the library so that we may schedule staff accordingly.

When can I bring my class to the library?
Class visits will be scheduled during the months of September through May only. Due to our regularly scheduled programming, and reduced hours and staff, availability is limited to the following times (staff permitting):

SEPTEMBER 14, 2015- DECEMBER 18, 2015
Mondays: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Fridays: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

JANUARY 4, 2016- MAY 30, 2016
Mondays: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Fridays: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Can I schedule a class visit at the Mission Branch Library?
Unfortunately, class visits can no longer be accommodated at the Mission Library.

Can I schedule a class visit at the Northside Branch Library?
Unfortunately, due to limited staffing, class visits cannot be accommodated at the Northside Library. If you would like to bring a class on your own to the library, please notify the library at least TWO weeks in advance. Please call 1-408-615-5500.

Can my students get library cards and check out books when we visit the Library?
Yes! Here is what you need to do:

    • Visit the library and pick up library card applications or download a printable copy here, at least two weeks before your scheduled visit.
    • Send applications home with your students. Make sure they are filled out completely and verified against school records.
    • Children’s applications must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.
    • To ensure processing, applications must be returned to the Youth Services desk at least seven days before your scheduled visit. Applications returned fewer than seven days before your scheduled visit may not be ready in time. Applications brought in on the day of your class visit may not be processed on that day.

Please note: If a student forgets his/her card, only a picture I.D. card can be used in its place.

My preschool is in San Jose. Can I schedule a class visit to your library?
No. Unfortunately, we are only able to accommodate schools within the City of Santa Clara or that belong to the Santa Clara Unified School District. If you are located in another city you must contact your city's library for a class visit.

How many adults should accompany my class?
We ask for a ratio of one adult for every seven students in order to make your class visit manageable. Accompanying adults are completely responsible for the behavior and safety of the children in your group. Please stress the importance of proper library behavior to your students before you come to the library.

Are class visits/group visits availble during the summer months?
No. Unfortunately, the demand of summer programming does not allow us to accommodate classes or groups. Your class or group is welcome to visit the library, but please note that we cannot give you an "organized" visit or tour. Please give us a courtesy call to let us know when you will be visiting the library during the summer.

If you have any other questions, please contact Youth Services at 1-408-615-2916.
