Program Series:

The Writer Speaks

Occasionally Bay Area authors are invited to talk about their books and respond to questions about their writing. Books they’ve written often are available for purchase and autographing following the presentations. Authors who have given programs as part of this series include: Phyllis Mattson, David Mas Masumoto, Francisco Jiminez, Ruthanne Lum McCumm, Laurie R. King, and Lora Roberts.

Santa Clara Valley Local History

Periodically the library offers a program on some aspect of Santa Clara Valley history, often in co-sponsorship with The Writer Speaks program or with the Santa Clara County Historical & Genealogical Society. Speakers have included local historians Lorie Garcia, Mary Jo Ignoffo, Leonard McKay, and Gage McKinney.

Book Chat Program

Let's talk books! Attend the Library's Book Reviews in the Central Park Library's Cedar Room, on the third Thursday of the month at 11:00 am. Adults of all ages are welcome.

At each meeting, Marlene Goldman, the library's Outreach Services librarian, reviews contemporary books on a wide range of topics and themes. Lively discussions of books and ideas follow. You don't have to read the books in advance — but you'll want to afterwards! You can find them listed in our "Featured Lists."

The Central Park Library is located at 2635 Homestead Road in Santa Clara.

Check our Calendar of Events for dates and times of current offerings.

For more information, phone Marlene Goldman at 408-615-2916.

Internet Classes

Internet classes are given throughout the year. Classes are free, last one hour, and are taught by Library staff. Regularly scheduled classes include:

  • Internet/Catalog Basics: This class is for those with little or no Internet experience—however, some skill with a computer mouse is required. The instructor will demonstrate and provide hands-on instruction in using a browser to navigate the Internet and for finding materials in the Library's catalog. (Occasionally this class is offered in Chinese.)
Need help using the mouse? Ask a Tech Aide or Reference Librarian to set up the "Mousing Around" program on a computer for you. Practice and get a chance to learn at your own pace.
  • Internet Search Strategies: This class goes beyond the basics of Internet searching by offering students search tips and Internet resources for improving searches. The class also will cover searching for maps and driving directions, and other informative topics. Students are encouraged to bring questions. Instruction will be hands-on.
  • Business Databases: Join us for a class to get acquainted with some of the Library’s subscription business databases: ReferenceUSA and Gale’s Business & Company Resource Center. These powerful online resources will assist you in obtaining pertinent, up-to-date information on local, national, and international businesses. Familiarity with a mouse and having some basic Internet skills will be helpful.
  • Value Line Research Center: Value Line Research Center is an online resource which provides investment analysis and research. In this class you will learn how to find a Value Line stock report and become familiar with the information contained in these reports. You will begin to learn Value Line’s system for rating and ranking stocks. Value Line’s analysis of industry groups and mutual funds also will be discussed. Basic proficiency using computers and the Internet is required.
  • Health Resources: Learn about Library and Web resources for your medical research and for healthy living. MedlinePlus, WebMD, PubMed, and two Health & Wellness databases available through the Central Park Library will be demonstrated. Attendees may practice using these resources during the presentation. The class will be presented by Doris Hayashikawa, Medical Librarian and Manager, Health Science Library, Kaiser Santa Clara.
  • ReferenceUSA: Join us for a hands-on session with an expert on this database of business, healthcare, and residential information. In the ReferenceUSA database there are 14 million companies from which one can find verified, accurate data. Learn how to make marketing lists using ReferenceUSA, and to limit by geographical area, company size, and other factors. Bring your questions and find solutions for your business.

Programs of special interest to teens are also scheduled (check the TeenNet Programs page for current offerings, or phone 408-615-2916 for more information). Here are some of the types of programs and classes that are offered:

Programs:

Storytime

Storytime is a great time to visit the library. Each 30 minute program consists of flannelboard storytelling, book reading, songs & music, fingerplay rhymes, and a short film. Puppets and other special activities also make occasional appearances.

Your young child will be introduced to group participation, new books and stories, and the magic of storytelling. Older children enjoy hearing old and new favorite stories, and participating in movement and music activities. You will learn songs and rhymes to repeat with your children at home.

Most storytimes are geared to ages 3 and up. During the school year, Toddler Storytimes, especially for 2-3 year olds, are a weekly event.

Storytime is a joyous occasion for the whole family. Our storytime schedule is posted on our monthly Calendar of Events. Evening and Saturday morning storytimes are scheduled regularly.

Family Nights

Join us for Family Night! Everyone in the family is invited to enjoy performances by professional musicians, storytellers, puppeteers, magicians, and actors. Programs are offered in the evenings on a monthly basis, and are free. Please check our Calendar of Events or phone 408-615-2916 for more information.

Summer Reading Program

Our Summer Reading Program encourages children to read over the summer, and includes a variety of programs and events for the whole family. Children of all ages, teenagers, and family members are all invited to participate.

Classes:

Parenting Classes

Youth Services offers classes for parents on an occasional basis. Past topics have included: "Is My Child Ready for Kindergarten?," "Helping Your Child with Homework," and "Homework Research Using the Internet." These programs are usually held on Sunday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. Please check our Calendar of Events or phone 408-615-2916 for more information.
