Jeremy
Lutes embarked on a career in the visual arts after studying Geology
and Electronic Music at University of California, Santa Cruz. He
is a founding member of Eccentric Design, a Bay Area arts collective
whose focus is fire, light, and performance. His work today is guided
by an enduring fascination with light, color, and natural forms.
Though technology is often an enabling element in his work, the
finished pieces are rarely “technological” in nature;
rather, they attempt to invoke more playful and ethereal origins.
This wire and glass installation
is located in the Young Adult section of the Library. It forms an
ornate tree, its trunk emerging from the wall and splitting into
branches laden with hundreds of leaves made of colored glass.
"The
tree appears to be growing through the wall of the Library, diminishing
the boundary between the exterior, natural world, and the interior
of the Library. Historically, trees have been symbols of growth
and knowledge; the idea here being that with knowledge comes the
ability to grow beyond boundaries. It is my desire to invite a sense
of wonder, to evoke flights of fancy, and to challenge the imagination
on to new heights."
